Practical Course in Serial casting and soft casting for children with neuromuscular disorders

This is a hands on course for physiotherapists who want to learn why, when and how to cast children with neuromuscular disorders. It is not aimed at children with increased or fluctuating tone. You will get practical experience of using a plaster saw, serial casting (using POP and Scotch Cast) and Soft Casting.

The course will be for 12-15 staff, working in the NHS or charity.

Introduction: Who and why we serially cast? Who do we not cast? Protocols, problems, contra-indications and practical hints

10:00 - 11:00

Serial casting: practical demonstration including taping under casts, padding and precautions

11:00 - 13:00

Workshop: Practical skills

13:00 - 14:00

Lunch

14:00 - 14:45

Soft casting: Who we cast and why, including practical demonstration

14:45 - 16:45

Workshop: Practical casting (soft and scotch)

16:45 - 17:00

  • Tea, coffee cold drinks and snacks will be available during the day
