Immersive journey in congenital heart disease: Anatomical lab, echocardiography simulation and virtual reality

This course has unfortunately been cancelled. A similar course will hopefully be planned in autumn 2024 - please refer to the GOSH Learning Academy Courses page for updates.

Focus on: Double Outlet Right Ventricle + Inter-atrial + Inter-ventricular communications

Monday 4 March, 09:00-17:00 GMT
Ryan Connolly Room, Zayed Centre for Research, London

Course Directors:

Dr Beatrice Bonello, GOSH, Professor Andrew Cook, UCL/GOSH, Dr Claudio Capelli, UCL/GOSH, Professor Jan Marek, GOSH

Event overview:

This innovative one-day course provides an in-depth review of specific congenital heart diseases using combined anatomy labs, Echocardiographic simulators and a novel virtual reality (VR) experience.

Led by a multi-disciplinary team of consultant morphologists and engineers from GOSH and UCL, this unique training offers an in-depth review of simple and complex interatrial communications; double outlet right ventricle; and ventricular septal defects, in order to address the challenges of lesions with marked anatomical variability:

  • Access to anatomical lab with hands-on sessions
  • Transoesophageal Echocardiogram (TOE) hands-on training in congenital heart disease, using simulation equipment with both baby and adult manikins
  • Cardiac morphology training through unique, immersive VR experiences

Led by VheaRts - a collaborative project between researchers from University College London and clinicians at Great Ormond Street Hospital

Learning objectives:

  • To understand the anatomical variability in Double Outlet Right Ventricle (DORV), Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) and Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) and the challenge of repairs.
  • To identify the relevant information with echocardiography.
  • To improve TOE skills in order to assess simple congenital cardiac lesions.
  • To familiarise with VR technology for future learning and planning.

Who should attend:

The course is aimed at Junior doctors, Cardiac Physiologists and Consultants in paediatric cardiology and adult congenital heart disease specialists and Echocardiography Technicians/Sonographers working with congenital heart disease patients.
