Summary of course:

Communication Difficulties in Children with Cleft and other Complex Craniofacial Conditions- A two day course presented by the Cleft and Craniofacial Speech and Language Therapy Teams at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

7th and 8th February 2019

Aimed at: 

  • Speech and Language Therapists, (both NHS and Independent) working with children and young people with cleft palate and craniofacial conditions who present with resonance, articulation and communication difficulties.

  • Cleft and/or craniofacial SLTs with limited experience wishing to broaden their understanding of communication difficulties in these populations

  • Community SLTs working with patient(s) with these communication profiles

  • SLTs with a special interest in communication difficulties in these populations

  • Link SLTs working with a small caseload of patients with these needs

  • Experienced SLTs wishing to refresh their knowledge of speech difficulties in these cohorts of patients

  • Overview of Conditions

  • Framework for approaching the conditions & their related speech and language difficulties

  • Speech Profiling

  • Assessment: perceptual, intra-oral, instrumental

  • Active Listening sessions to tune into resonance, airflow, cleft speech characteristics, articulatory patterns related to specific craniofacial conditions

  • Airway management & Middle ear dysfunction – ENT surgeon

  • Conductive hearing loss & impact on speech & language

  • Case Studies for evaluation and therapy

  • Management of velopharyngeal dysfunction

  • Language Skills in craniofacial, cleft and related syndromic conditions

  • Early Identification + Intervention

  • Therapy for cleft and craniofacial speech characteristics

  • Parent Led Articulation Therapy (PLAT) – Dr. Debbie Sell PhD

  • Psychosocial issues associated with speech in cleft palate and craniofacial conditions – Clinical psychologist on Cleft and Craniofacial teams


Course objectives:

  • Increase knowledge of the structural and functional aspects in cleft & craniofacial conditions that can impact on communication
  • To apply this knowledge to caseload management
  • To update knowledge of recent advances in the management of cleft & craniofacial populations
  • Share best practice on assessment, intervention and long term communication management
  • Network with speech and language therapy colleagues to access peer support
