When a Child Dies:
Managing Sudden Unexpected Death in Children (SUDiC)
This simulation-based course aims to provide participants with the opportunity to explore and feel supported to navigate the sudden unexpected death of patients in paediatric healthcare settings.
Overview:
This two-day course is delivered in a hybrid format. Day 1 takes place online and Day 2 takes place at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.
By joining the course, candidates will benefit from interactive talks, reflective sessions, simulation scenarios and debrief discussions.
Course Aims:
This course aims to provide candidates with the following:
An understanding of the background and current context of sudden unexpected death in children (SUDiC)
The opportunity to explore practical aspects of care for patients and families when death is unexpected
The ability to consider ways to care for families before and after the death of their child
An insight into the complexities of multi-agency working including roles and responsibilities of team members when a child dies
Effective communication strategies to draw upon when a child dies
Consideration of spiritual, cultural, and religious needs of families
An understanding of the legal aspects of death processes including child death review
An awareness of the support available from wider teams such as bereavement, mortuary, and chaplaincy
The ability to reflect on the impact of SUDiC on ourselves, and strategies to support staff
Who is this course for?
This course is open to multi-agency workers who support patients and families through sudden unexpected death in children, in acute healthcare settings.
