Me First is an award-winning education and interactive, online training resource, that helps health and social care professionals build on their knowledge, skills and confidence in communicating with children and young people, and supports shared decision making. Me first has been developed over 8 years, with funding from NHS Health Education England, and is now part of the Great Ormond Street Hospital Learning Academy (GLA). All our training is co-produced and co-delivered with young people. Our training and resources support NICE guidelines (2021) for working with babies, children and young people.
Me First aims to:
– Promote the use of the Me First communication tools and approaches to support communication with children and young people.
– Increase health and social care professionals’ knowledge of the barriers and challenges to communicating with children and young people, build on their existing skills, and increase their confidence through Me First training.
– Collect and grow a hub of resources to share ideas and expertise in communicating with children and young people.
The Me First programme is open to both GOSH staff and external users.
In this training you will learn a framework of knowledge that facilitates conversations and shared decision making about transition, that is developmentally appropriate, and person-centred for young people, during adolescence & emerging adulthood; before, during and after transfer of service provision. The training supports the National Core Capability Framework for the Transition of Young People into Adult services in England and is endorsed by the Burdett Trust.
Whilst it is not a requirement to have completed the introductory Me first Fundamentals module prior to attending this course, we would recommend that you do, as this provides the essentials of child and young person-centred communication beyond the basics.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course you will:
- have enhanced your understanding of young people and families’ experiences of transition and of growing up and gaining independence.
- be able to apply the Me first Transition Communication Model to relevant scenarios, thinking holistically about young peoples’ lives and encompassing specific needs such as learning, sensory and/or communication disabilities, and mental health.
- have reflected on current practice and identify strengths and opportunities for individual development and service improvement.
Course Outline
Part 1: Introductions, theory, interactive activities and discussions to reflect on experiences of Transition.
Part 2: Discussion about CYP journey through care, barriers and enablers for communication.
Part 3: Review Me first communication transition model and application.
Part 4: Small group discussion and activities for application
