This training can form part of the additional blended learning CPD required hours for Level 3 Safeguarding 

Me First is an award-winning education and interactive, online training resource, that helps health and social care professionals develop their knowledge, skills and confidence in communicating with children and young people, and supports shared decision making. Me First has been developed over 8 years with funding from NHS Health Education England, and is now part of the Great Ormond Street Hospital Learning Academy (GLA). All our training is co-produced and co-delivered with young people. Our training and resources support NICE guidelines (2021) for working with babies, children and young people.

Me First aims to:

– Promote the use of the Me First communication tools and approaches to support communication with children and young people

– Increase health and social care professionals’ knowledge of the barriers and challenges to communicating with children and young people, build on their existing skills, and increase their confidence through Me First training

– Collect and grow a hub of resources to share ideas and expertise in communicating with children and young people

The Me First programme is open to both GOSH staff and external users 

Course Outline

To share experiences of having difficult conversations with children and young people about safeguarding, mental health or other sensitive issues.

To explore the signs, signals and situations that make us worried about a young person.

To explore issues that affect young peoples peaking up and professionals' ability to hear.

To explore children and young people’s experiences of talking about difficult issues.

To develop the skills and confidence to facilitate children and young people centred conversations when there are concerns about safeguarding, welfare or wellbeing .

Development of understanding and application of the 'Me first CYP Centred Conversations About Concerns Communication Model' to facilitate CYP-centred conversations.

To explore additional resources that might be used to support a conversation with CYP, including those who have a range of abilities and communication needs.

To encourage Health and Social Care Professionals to Identify their own strengths in their current practice as well as opportunities for individual development..

Assessment information

You will need to complete a short DEN questionnaire to receive a certificate which confirms your participation and for the hours to be counted towards your mandatory safeguarding training hours. 

Communication

This course is delivered via Zoom 

Communication in this course will happen through the use of:

  • Presentation - you will learn about the Me First model through presentations given by subject matter experts
  • Case studies - you will explore case studies as a group through facilitated discussion 
  • Discussions - they are an important part of this course as they expand your thoughts and help you gain insight from your peers. You should read the discussion instructions and tasks carefully and engage in them. Interaction and engagement during this course are actively
