Me First is an award-winning education and interactive, online training resource, that helps health and social care professionals develop their knowledge, skills and confidence in communicating with children and young people, and supports shared decision making. Me first has been developed over 8 years with funding from NHS Health Education England, and is now part of the Great Ormond Street Hospital Learning Academy. All our training is co-produced and co-delivered by young people. Our training and resources support NICE guidelines (2021) for working with babies, children and young people.

Me First aims to:

– Promote the use of the Me First communication tools and approaches to support communication with children and young people

– Increase health and social care professionals’ knowledge of the barriers and challenges to communicating with children and young people, build on their existing skills, and increase their confidence through Me First training

– Collect and grow a hub of resources to share ideas and expertise in communicating with children and young people

The Me First programme is open to both GOSH staff and external users

Health Coaching aims to help people to become activated and develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to manage their own health and care. Health coaching skills can support clinicians and other health care professionals to develop children and young people’s capacity to consider lifestyle changes, and fully participate in their care. Coaching underpins the continuum of shared decision making, person-centred care and behaviour change, to enable people to have positive conversations about their health.

This course is designed for all health and social care practitioners of all levels of experience, who work with children and young people.

Whilst it is not a requirement to have completed the introductory Me first Fundamentals module prior to attending this course, we would recommend that you do, as this provides the essentials of child and young person-centred communication beyond the basics.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, you will:

• have an enhanced understanding of the application of behavioural change theory and health coaching in relation to the Me first Fundamentals and CYP centred conversations in health and social care.

• be able to apply the Me first Health coaching Model to conversations with CYP about their care, thinking holistically about their life and facilitating them to make choices about their health and lifestyle and enable self-care.

• have reviewed health-coaching related resources in relation to practice scenarios to facilitate CYP to make choices about their health and lifestyle behaviours at a developmentally appropriate level.
