Who is this event for: Immunology and bone marrow transplant – paediatric and adult trainees, consultants, together with immunology and bone marrow transplant nurses.
Key learning aims and objectives: Knowledge on chronic granulomatous disease (a form of primary immune deficiency)- basic science of the disease, pathogenesis, complications, management approach including conservative vs HSCT or gene therapy approach with reflection on effect of each approach on clinical outcome and patient reported outcomes.
Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is the most common symptomatic phagocytic defect. It is caused by mutations in genes encoding protein subunits of the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase complex. CGD is characterized by a defective intracellular killing of phagocytosed organisms due to a defective oxidative burst in the neutrophils and macrophages. CGD is characterized by severe recurrent bacterial and fungal infections and dysregulated inflammatory responses resulting in granuloma formation and other inflammatory disorders such as colitis. This 1-day educational program is meant for adults, paediatric immunology trainees and consultants, trainees in general medicine or paediatrics with interest in immunology and nurses who look after patients with primary immune deficiency.
After this program, you will learn about different forms of CGD ; how to suspect, tests needed and different available treatment options. You will gain more insight into different services available for this unique cohort of patients in Great Ormond Street Hospital and Royal Free Hospital. Our aim is to offer a supported channel to doctors and patients across the UK. Certificates will be provided afterwards with approved CPD points from the RCPCH.
