Virtual Delivery
This course is aimed at Speech & Language Therapists who work with children and young people (CYP) with voice conditions in a community, educational or hospital setting. SLT voice specialists may also find it relevant to their work. The main focus will be the assessment and management of common childhood voice conditions e.g. vocal fold nodules/muscle tension dysphonia in a framework of evidence-based practice.
This Foundation Course will be structured around presentations, interactive workshops and small group work and is delivered virtually via 4 half-day modules that focus on ‘Reaching a Working Diagnosis’, and ‘Devising and Delivering Treatment Programmes’
Participants will be strongly encouraged to attend all 4 modules and to share their questions, experiences and ideas.
The 4 modules will cover a range of topics including:
- Common aetiologies impacting vocal function and their management
- The impact of growth, development, health and psychosocial complexity within the young person's life.
- ENT and SLT assessment procedures & when to refer.
- Behaviour Change COM-B model and systemic approaches, such as Narrative Therapy (White/Epston 1990), for engaging young people and families in consultations, and for planning and delivering treatment.
- An overview of indirect therapy approaches and basic principles of direct voice therapy techniques used with children.
- Setting up voice services for CYP.
