Core Tics: Management

Wednesday 4-Thursday 5 June 2025, 10:00-16:00 BST

Who we are:

The Tic Service at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) is a National Specialist Service that cares for children and young people up to the age of 17 years. We have a specialist multi-disciplinary team that works closely with other departments within GOSH and routinely shares the care of children with local services. There is a strong research collaboration between GOSH, University College London and other Tourette syndrome clinics in the UK. We have an international reputation for clinical research into treatments for Tourette syndrome.

Specialist training:

Behavioural treatment for tics is used as the treatment for children and adults with tics and Tourette syndrome (TS). We acknowledge that there is a shortage of therapists trained to deliver this treatment for people with tics and TS, and so in order to address this, the Tic Service at Great Ormond Street Hospital has put together a 2 day package of training for clinicians in the UK and internationally. Attendees of this training course will learn the clinical skills needed to deliver behavioural treatment for tics and will have access to important materials to facilitate treatment. Clinicians will also have access to an online group consultation/supervision session to be completed within 6 months of the training.

What the training will provide:

  • A 2-day training course suitable for professionals from disciplines such as Psychology, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Paediatrics, Psychiatry and Neurology.

  • The training will be most helpful for those with training and experience of delivering Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and behavioural therapy with children.

  • The course will provide training of gold standard assessment measures. In addition to practical training in Exposure and Response Prevention, Habit Reversal Training and guidance on medical management.

  • The course will contain training videos, demonstrations with children with tics, materials to use post-training and a certificate of attendance.

  • Included in the training is the opportunity to attend a post-course online consultation session where clinicians can bring cases for discussion and reflect on ways to further improve the delivery of treatment. The consultation will need to be completed within 6 months of the training, and clinicians will have a choice of three dates to choose from.

Who should attend:

Healthcare professionals from disciplines such as Psychology, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Paediatrics, Psychiatry and Neurology who have some experience working with young people who have tics.

Training:

The training will be delivered via a remote platform. An experienced pair of Psychologists supported by a Neuropsychiatrist will deliver the course. These are interactive sessions and there are opportunities ask questions and have discussions with the training team.

Training package includes the 2-day training (12 hours), training manuals and consultation support following the course.
