The GOSH Paediatric Long-Term Ventilation Course 2024

Thursday 6 June, 9:00-17:30: Online lectures
Friday 7 June, 9:00-17:30: Face-to-face (F2F) workshops at Holiday Inn Bloomsbury 

A comprehensive 2-day course focusing on the care of children requiring long-term invasive or non-invasive ventilation

Day 1 virtual lecture based teaching on:

  • Sleep disordered breathing in children
  • Indications and epidemiology of long-term ventilation (invasive and non-invasive ventilation) in children
  • From pathophysiology to the practicalities e.g., investigations, initiation, monitoring, escalating/weaning ventilation
  • Long-term ventilation and ethical issues

Day 2 face-to-face workshop based teaching on:

  • Choice of ventilator and interface, including hands on experience of equipment, mask fitting, circuits
  • Clinical scenarios, troubleshooting clinical or equipment problems
  • Tracheostomy care
  • Introduction to cough assist

Learning objectives: 

  • Understanding of the indications and epidemiology of long-term ventilation (invasive and non-invasive) in children.
  • Provide practical skills around initiation and care of long-term ventilation in children, including choices of ventilators, interface, mask fitting, tracheostomy care and circuits.
  • Tips on troubleshoot clinical scenarios and equipment problems.
  • Provide an overview of the multidisciplinary input to the care of long-term ventilated children.

Who should attend?

General/Respiratory Paediatric Trainees, Paediatricians, Nurses, Allied Health Care professionals and Carers.

GOSH staff wishing to attend can either a) pay via debit/credit card (if they plan to self-fund their ticket) or b) apply through the Study Leave Fund or departmental funds (where applicable). Those applying via route b do not need to complete the registration form on this page. Please submit your study leave funding application and when approved the GLA Events Management Team will manually register you for the course. Please email if you require assistance. 


Please note that registration will close on Thursday 6 June, 8:00 BST. Dietary requirements for day 2 must be submitted by Wednesday 22 May.


Please note that day 1 (6 June) will be recorded (subject to speakers’ consent), with the recording shared with delegates for a short period (up to three months post-event). Day 2 (7 June) will not be recorded.


Cancellation policy: 

Delegates are entitled to a full refund if they cancel their place more than 14 days before an event. All cancellation requests must be provided in writing to Personal arrangements including travel, accommodation or hospitality relating to the event which have been arranged by you are at your own risk. The GLA shall not be liable for the cost of these arrangements if you cancel your place at an event or if the event is cancelled or postponed by the GLA.

The personal data you provide to us on the event booking form is being collected so that we can contact you with important updates about the event, ensure your dietary and accessibility requirements are accommodated, process your payment, notify event partners or individuals shaping the event about the delegate list (only your name and job title/organisation will be shared. Your contact details will never be shared) and to pass on an evaluation survey after the event. It will only be used by the GLA for this purpose and the data will be securely deleted in line with GOSH’s data retention policies.
