Young Visitors Programme - Summer 2023 - AHP

The Young Visitors Programme

Please note this page is applicable to those applying for a placement during the Summer Holidays Only (7th August to 11th August 2023 Only).  If you are requesting a placement outside of this window you application will not be assessed for suitability and you will be required to reapply, at the correct interval.

The Young Visitors Programme is an initiative to offer short placements in the different clinical areas of GOSH to students thinking of applying for medicine at university. This programme is suitable for students aged 16-19 years (ideally sixth form students post GCSE) and runs throughout the year, offering 1-to- 4-day placements in the speciality of the student’s choice, dependent upon availability of places and supervising staff.  The purpose of the programme is to give an idea of what it is like to work in the NHS by shadowing clinical and nursing staff; this is a type of work experience although there is no hands-on work. Students are always supervised during this placement.

‘Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) make up the third largest workforce in the NHS. There are 14 AHP specialities and at GOSH these specialities include Music Therapists, Dietitians, Occupational Therapists, Operating Department Practitioners, Orthoptists, Physiotherapists, Radiographers and Speech and Language therapists.

Work experience will give you further insight into the varied career opportunities within AHP and help towards your university application. Your experience at GOSH will consist of time in different departments, so you can experience a wide range of AHP specialities. (Lots of students attend AHP work experience preferring a different speciality to the one they thought they would!) There will be a variety of learning opportunities such as teaching, experience of patient treatment and consultation sessions.’

Please ensure you read the Essential Information, print the Parental Consent document, and have the letter from your Head of School (on headed paper) ready, before starting your application.  You are unable to log back into applications submitted.
